Why LED Drivers Flicker — and How to Fix It

LED flicker comes from driver overload, output ripple, shared-rail loading and poor dimming logic. The four causes, how to diagnose each, and the fixes.

Short answer

LED flicker has four common causes: a driver overloaded beyond its rating, output ripple from a poor conversion design, multiple fixtures loading one supply beyond its limit, and unstable dimming logic. Diagnosis follows the load: measure total wattage against the driver rating first — the fix is most often correct sizing plus 20% headroom. Drivers verified flicker-free at full load, like Towe's TC linear series and 48 V track units, remove the cause at the source.

Key points

  • Cause 1: load exceeds driver rating — check the arithmetic first
  • Cause 2: output ripple — cheap conversion design, worse on cameras
  • Cause 3: shared rails loaded past their limit (magnetic track)
  • Cause 4: dimming mismatch between driver and controller

Start with the load, not the driver

Before blaming any component, do the arithmetic: total connected wattage vs driver rating. An 100 W driver carrying 120 W of strip will flicker, run hot and die early — and no brand of driver prevents that. The 20% headroom rule exists because of this failure mode.

The four causes in practice

1. Overload

Symptom: flicker that worsens as more of the run lights up, warm housing. Fix: re-size to load × 1.2, or split the load across two drivers. This cause explains the majority of field complaints we see.

2. Output ripple

Symptom: fine, fast flicker visible on phone cameras; possible coil whine. Cause: crude conversion design with high residual ripple on the DC output. Fix: replace with a driver whose ripple is specified and controlled — this matters most in retail, studio and display environments.

3. Shared-rail loading (magnetic track)

Symptom: a whole track section flickers when several spots run together. Cause: the 48 V supply is sized for the rail’s spot count on paper but not verified under real multi-head loading. Fix: a supply verified flicker-free at full load with multi-head loading — which is exactly the verification Towe track drivers go through before shipping.

4. Dimming mismatch

Symptom: flicker or stepping only at low dimming levels. Cause: the dimming method (DIP-set level, MESH scenes) and the load’s minimum level do not agree. Fix: confirm the dimming platform covers the fixture’s minimum; Towe’s DIP-switch TR series sets a stable level once, and MESH smart drivers handle daily scene changes.

A 10-minute diagnostic order

  1. Sum the load wattage. Compare with the driver label.
  2. Photograph the light with a phone camera in slow motion — ripple shows instantly.
  3. Disconnect half the load. If flicker stops, it was overloading (cause 1 or 3).
  4. If flicker only appears when dimming, it is cause 4.
  5. If flicker persists at 50% load with no dimming, the driver’s conversion design is the problem — replace it (cause 2).

Why production process shows up here

Ripple and load stability are not luck; they are test outcomes. Every Towe driver passes computerized ICT and 100% full-load aging before packing, and track and linear families are specifically verified flicker-free at full load. If your current installation flickers and the arithmetic checks out, the driver you bought was never tested the way ours is.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why does flicker show up on camera but not to the eye?

Camers and slow-motion video sample frames and can alias with driver ripple. Retail displays and studios should specify low-ripple drivers explicitly.

Can flicker damage the LEDs?

Flicker itself is a symptom; the underlying overload or ripple usually is ageing the strip and the driver at the same time. Fix the cause, not the symptom.
